Train collides with CN vehicle, again
For the second time in a month, a Canadian National Railway train collided with a CN vehicle north of Jasper.
According to CN, a westbound train struck an on-track vehicle about 32 km north of Jasper, April 18.
The accident happened around 8:15 a.m. and there were no reports of injuries.
That accident comes two weeks after a CN employee was airlifted to hospital after his work truck was struck by a train at a private railroad crossing April 4.
According to CN, the first accident happened around 9:30 a.m. about 20 km north of Jasper. The employee, Jason Winacott, was the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle.
According to a Go Fund Me campaign, he was crossing a blind corner when a freight train hit the back passenger side of his work truck.
When EMS arrived he was unconscious and intubated before being airlifted to Edmonton where he has remained in a coma in critical, but stable condition.
Since April 11, the crowd funding campaign has raised more than $14,000 to support the family.
The circumstances surrounding both incidents remain under investigation, according to a CN spokesperson.
Tennis club receives $39,000 grant
The Jasper Tennis Club will resurface the town’s tennis courts this summer thanks to a $39,690 grant from the province’s Community Facility Enhancement Program.
The municipality will match the funding dollar-for-dollar bringing the total investment to nearly $80,000, according to Christine Nadon, the town’s communications manager.
The municipality is currently in discussions with the tennis club and is waiting for quotes to come in before moving forward with the project.
Once the tennis courts are resurfaced, additional lines will be added to accommodate pickle ball.
Battle Royale returns
Jasper’s fourth annual Battle Royale is set to return to the stage May 7.
The top two winners of the musical competition will be awarded a spot in this year’s Jasper Folk Music Festival, taking place from Sept. 9-11.
Those wishing to participate in this year’s battle can enter as a solo/duo act or as a band. The cost to enter as a solo/duo act is $20 and the cost for a band is $40.
All of profits go directly to the Jasper Heritage Folk and Blues Society to help support Jasper’s Folk Music Festival.
Jasperite to host Katimavik meeting
Former Katimavik project leaders and participants are invited to attend a meeting in Jasper on May 6 at 6 p.m.
The meeting comes nearly a month after the federal government promised to re-launch the national volunteer program, which was cut in 2012 by the former Conservative government.
Since its formation in 1977, more than 35,000 young Canadians have participated in Katimavik programs across Canada.
