VANCOUVER — CN Rail warns flooding could have "catastrophic impacts" on cross-country services in legal action it has filed to force Parks Canada to consider a protective barrier for its main line through Jasper National Park.

Only two gas stations remain in Jasper after two others were destroyed in last summer’s wildfire.

"I think CN is pushing this ahead without really checking into the effect it's going to have on the town or their employees that live there."

Valemount is also hoping to draw in more visitors with an upcoming three-day community festival called Valemountain Days, which runs Friday (June 13) to Sunday (June 15).

During each year’s campaign, Tim Hortons customers can buy a special cookie where all proceeds go toward a local charity selected by restaurant owners.

"Losing the rooms that we did in Jasper, we knew that would have the impact on our skier visits, and what we sort of expected in terms of business levels is exactly as it turned out."

Over a dozen Jasper restaurants were displaced during the 2024 Jasper wildfire. Many are still picking up the pieces.

"Dr. Janet Jones did a really good job of making sure that all the essential services were provided right in town for the community, and my goal is to continue on with her legacy and make sure that we still are able to provide this helpful service."

"With decreased overnight inventory, we know that there will be a net decrease of people in the community as well."

The pop-up shop opened on May 1, with around eight more businesses expected to move in over the next two months until an official launch on Canada Day long weekend.
