“Canadians are not lazy”

Dear Editor,

I’m not pleased about MP Jim Eglinski’s comment “don’t expect changes to the foreign worker program.”

The federal Conservatives have their heads in the sand on this one.

Firstly, if they would observe when travelling, they would become informed and note that foreign workers work in all other countries. In a small older hotel in London, England with approximately 60 employees, only the manager is from England, all other workers are from other countries and most are temporary.

In Iceland, many workers are from Russia, Latvia and France.

Secondly, Jim Eglinski made a comment about “lazy” Canadians. Canadians are not lazy, our society and education system have encouraged individuals to at least get a trade, or technical school or business diploma or a university degree.

Why would anyone with the above qualifications work as a room cleaner or a fast food clerk. Again totally misinformed.

Let’s talk about the Philippines. That country of over 50 million cannot provide jobs, period, nevermind quality jobs. This is why they are so anxious to work wherever they can find work, so if Canada does not open up its foreign worker program we will lose out in the global scene. This will affect our tourism industry.

Lastly, the Conservatives are supposed to be a hands off, leave it to the industry, type of government. Talk about a 180 degree switch on this one.

Canadian employers should be permitted to hire the best workers for their business, at present many businesses are not allowed to do that. While it greatly impacts the tourism industry, it also impacts many other sectors of our country.
