The Jasper Activity Centre was packed on Jan. 19 as more than a dozen local groups and businesses duked it out for a string of coveted awards at Mountain Park Lodge’s annual chili cook-off.

The 29-year-old contest required teams to make the best chili from scratch at the activity centre. Before the cooking began, the chili judges determined that no ingredients could be pre-cooked or chopped prior to the start and, just to make things a little more challenging, no beans were allowed.

Competitors also entertain spectators by donning costumes and creative themed booths.

Taking the top spot was Tourism Jasper. The gang not only showed their skills in the kitchen, but also flaunted their creativity, dressing as characters from the hit Netflix series Stranger Things. Taking second was Earls Kitchen and Bar, followed by a joint effort between Jasper Rafting Adventures and Explore Jasper.

Snagging the people’s choice award was Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge.

Earning awards for their masterly crafted costumes were Coco’s Cafe and their Beetlejuice theme, Jasper Events Management who donned Batman costumes and the Jasper chapter of the Association Canadienne-Française de l’Alberta (ACFA) with their circus theme, complete with contortionist twins and a life-sized camel.
