The Franco-Albertan flag was adopted by the Association canadienne-francaise de l’Alberta (ACFA) in 1982, the winning entry of a contest sponsored by the Francophone Youth of Alberta. The flag includes the wild rose representing the Province of Alberta as well as the fleur-de-lys. The white and blue stripes on the flag represent the waters and roads Francophone explorers and colonists travelled throughout the province.
March 1 marks the beginning of a month-long celebration of French culture in Alberta, with flag raising ceremonies taking place across the province.
