Jasper’s Freeride ski team took home four medals during the Alberta Winter Games held in Medicine Hat Feb. 13-16.
Cora Laidlaw and Piece Decore each won a gold medal in the moguls, while Thomas Hladun and Hunter Boyer each earned a bronze medal in their respective age categories.
“We did very well and had some really good results in moguls and some solid runs in slopestyle,” said Randy Timmins, the team’s assistant coach.
In all, seven athletes from the team competed in the four-day event, which he described as a “mini Olympics.”
Among some of the highlights was 11-year-old Benoit Ederle, the team’s youngest athlete, who put together some of his best turns of the season.
“He did a really good second run in moguls. He didn’t medal, but he probably did some of his best skiing,” said Timmins.
More than 1,000 athletes from across the province competed in the fun competition, which includes 20 different sports from freestyle skiing to volleyball, as well as an opening and closing ceremony.
A few of the athletes also had a chance to check out some of the other competitions over the weekend before attending the closing ceremonies on Feb. 16
The skiing events were held at Hidden Valley Ski Resort, which was the only place that had any snow, according to Timmins.
“It was a really good experience for the kids,” he said. “Our goal all year was to do well here and we accomplished our goal.”
