Hinton shelves theatre project: Project too costly to proceed

Detailed drawing designs were completed in November 2012 and the estimated construction costs were received in late December 2012, with an estimated budget of $8 million.

Detailed drawing designs were completed in November 2012 and the estimated construction costs were received in late December 2012, with an estimated budget of $8 million.

The partnership tried to re-evaluate the design and alternative design options were considered, however they were unable to reduce the budget adequately without compromising the “shared use” of the facility.

“There is no doubt that our community will be disappointed to hear of this announcement,” stated Ian Duncan, mayor of Hinton, in a press release. “Council understands that it is important to see private sector provide a movie cinema in our community and the partnership offered a great opportunity to develop the performing arts theatre, maximizing the venue to its full potential. It is our hope that the private sector will continue to seek opportunity to reestablish a movie cinema in our community and the Town remains committed to seeking opportunities to seeing the development of a performing arts theatre.”

In assessing alternative designs and building sites, it was determined that a budget of $6 million and investment would still be required.

“The primary cost challenges in developing the old IGA site were engineered structural requirements to support the adjacent building roof loads, as well as mechanical and electrical requirements,” stated Wendy Lesser, property and projects manager. “In the initial design concept, architectural and interior design were important aspects of the building; however, we kept these aspects to a minimum in consideration of the budget.”

Information released by the Town of Hinton indicates that they remain committed to developing a performing arts theatre and welcome interested parties from the private sector to contact them directly.
