Muni approves busking pilot project
Jasper’s streets are about to get a lot more entertaining after the municipality unanimously approved a busking pilot project, June 21.
The pilot project will run from June 22 to October 30. Habitat for the Arts, which spearheaded the initiative, will issue individual permits to buskers to operate in four specific locations in the downtown core.
Marianne Garrah, of Habitat for the Arts, informed council that a business owner recently voiced their concern about excessive noise at one of the locations on the pedway between Lucias Gems and Gifts and Baxter’s Souvenirs and Gifts.
She said the non-profit organization will do its best to ensure that location doesn’t host musicians or buskers that make a lot of noise.
The pilot project will allow buskers to perform between noon and 8 p.m. daily and artists will be allowed to occupy one location for two hours at a time. If an artist wishes to play more than two hours they will be required to re-register their next location and can not return to the same spot on the same day.
