More than 200 people showed their support and opened up their wallets during a silent auction for Ryan Titchener and his girlfriend Tereza Turecká, Aug. 8.

Titchener was seriously injured on July 15 while attempting to summit Pigeon Spire in Bugaboo Provincial Park with his girlfriend.

With 14 broken ribs, a collapsed left lung and a damaged spine he has very limited motor functions below his knees and has a long road to recovery ahead of him.

To support his recovery, Rockaboo Mountain Adventures, where Titchener worked, organized a silent auction, which raised more than $10,000, according to Lisa Darrah, manager of the company.

“It’s unbelievable how Jasperites come together in a time of need and it makes you feel comfortable as a community member to think that if you were in that person’s shoes you would have that kind of support as well,” said Darrah.

She thanked everyone for donating to the cause and taking the time to show their support.

New Orleans inspired band gets groovy in Jasper

The melodic gypsy jazz and indie pop beats of Vancouver’s Red Haven will once again grace the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion’s stage, Aug. 16.

When the band’s Brendan Steele and Jennifer Charters visited New Orleans in February 2014, they were struck by the spontaneity and simplicity expressed by the roving swing bands of Frenchman Street, stopping traffic every night of the week. They returned home with a notebook full of songs, and a concept for a band that would encompass the vitality of a New Orleans street party with the west-coast Canadian folk and indie music they were raised on.

Since then the band has been feverishly composing songs and touring across Canada.

The quartet will play tunes from their two albums: Vilified and The Road Above You. The show at the legion kicks-off at 9 p.m. and tickets are $15.

Before making their stop in Jasper, Red Haven will rock all three days of the Robson Valley Music Festival in Dunster, B.C., Aug. 12-14.

Sweet and smoky roots band takes the stage

Since the beginning of July, Lindsay Pratt and Naomi Shore, also known as Twin Peaks, have been traveling across Western Canada promoting their debut album Trouble.

As their tour comes to a close, they’ve made sure to stop in Jasper, taking the stage at the Olive Bistro and Lounge, Aug. 16.

Combining rich harmonies, a piano, a guitar, two ukuleles and catchy lyrics, it’s no surprise that the duo have been snagging awards from all over. In 2012, the girls made the top 10 for CBC Radio 3’s contest Tracks on Tracks, and in 2014 the group rose to the national finals in the CBC searchlight contest. They’ve also taken home a Vancouver Island Music Award and their album and self-titled EP have been nominated twice for a Western Canadian Music Award.

The show starts at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be bought at the door.
