Eglinski elected to environment committee

Yellowhead MP Jim Eglinski has been elected vice-chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable Development.

The committee studies the programs and legislation of Environment Canada, Parks Canada and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, as well as reports of the Commissioner of the Environment and Sustainable Development.

This is a very important committee and I am very pleased to have been elected as vice-chair, said Eglinski in a press release.

Eglinski shares the role of vice-chair with NDP MP Nathan Cullen of the SkeenaBulkley Valley riding in British Columbia.

Liberal MP Deborah Schulte of the Ontario riding of KingVaughan was elected chair.

Cavell and Tonquin opening soon

Cavell Road, Portal Creek and the Tonquin Valley areas will open for winter recreation Feb. 16.

Track-setting on Cavell Road is expected to be in place but will depend on snow conditions.

All other areas of important caribou habitat open on March 1, including the Maligne Valley, Pobokton Creek and the North Boundary areas of the park.

For trip planning, trail conditions and information on Jaspers winter offer, visit www.parkscanada.gc.ca/jasper or stop by the Jasper Information Centre.

Diversity Project opening

The Jasper Diversity Project will have its official opening at the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives Feb. 12.

The project showcases the diversity in Jaspers peoplescape through photos collected by Community Outreach Services.

All told nearly 300 community members have taken part, each posing in front of a camera holding a piece of paper that explains, in their own words and handwriting, what makes them unique.

The exhibit will see all 300 photos displayed in a number of different mediums.

The opening begins at 6 p.m. and the community is invited to attend.
