Jasper Folk Fest gearing up for 2016Â

The Jasper Folk Music Festival returns Sept. 9-11.
This year’s headliners include Vancouver’s highly acclaimed Delhi 2 Dublin and Edmonton’s folk-rock trio Scenic Route to Alaska.
Festival organizers have also secured vintage folk band Rosie & the Riveters from Saskatoon along with west coast Canadian roots artist WiL. And if that’s not enough, back by popular demand are Birds of Bellwood, a crowd favourite from last year’s festival.
This year’s festival also includes more than a dozen other performances, including several local acts.
A weekend pass costs $110 and can be purchased online at www.jasperfolkmusicfestival.ca.
Tickets can also be picked up at Nutter’s Bulk & Natural Foods, Tekarra Colour Lab and the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion.
Intersection improvements along Highway 16
Four intersections along Highway 16 are slated for construction between the east gate and the Town of Jasper.
The intersections include: Maligne Lake Road, Transfer Station Road, Palisades Centre Road and Airport Road.
Construction began Aug. 29, and will occasionally include single lane alternating traffic and/or lane closures to complete the work. Drivers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes and speed limits will be reduced to 50 km/hr. Traffic control personnel will also be on site.
Work will occur from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., six days a week with no work on Sunday or long weekends.
Jasper Short Film Festival postponed
Originally slated for Oct. 15, the Jasper Short Film Festival recently announced it will be moving its date to the spring of 2017.
All submissions received to date will be held for the 2017 program.
Organizers are aiming to show 25 films at next year’s affair.
Submitted films can be from any genre as long as they run under 30 minutes.
The new deadline to submit films is Feb.17, 2017.
Application forms can be found at www.jasperfilmfestival.com. There is a $20 fee for each submission. For more information contact: [email protected].
New speed limit in effect
New speed limit changes are now in effect for the areas surrounding École Desrochers, Jasper Elementary School, Jasper Junior/Senior High School and the Jasper Activity Centre.
The new speed limit is 30 km/h at all times to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety. The affected areas include portions of Bonhomme Street, Maligne Avenue, Elm Avenue, Geikie Street and Pyramid Lake Road.
New signage is in place to inform drivers.
Municipal council approved changing the speed limit in the spring after a request from the Grande Yellowhead Public School Division (GYPSD).
