The Jasper Folk Festival is getting creative with their fundraising initiatives this year. For the rest of the summer the festival’s board will be hosting ALT nights every Tuesday at the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion.

The money-raising affair will have two alternating themes: a trivia night and a rock and roll bingo night. Aside from bragging rights, winners will be awarded prizes that have been donated by local businesses.

The event will take place every week at 7 p.m. There will be a $5 cover charge and all proceeds will go to the Jasper Folk Festival.

Children’s choir to perform in Jasper

Calgary’s Cantaré Children’s Choir will be gracing Jasper with a live performance at St. Mary and St. George Anglican Church, July 4.

Members of the Cantaré ensemble have performed in numerous operas in Calgary and performed at other prestigious events including the Banff International Television Festival Awards and the Calgary Kiwanis Music Festival.

The choir is made up of four ensembles of children aged six to 19. The two older ensembles—Cantaré and Cantando—will be the ones performing in Jasper. The children in these ensembles range from 12-19.

The show costs $5 at the doors, and starts at 7:30 p.m.

The following day, on July 5, Habitat for the Arts will host a free workshop with the group’s teacher from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The workshop will be held at Habitat for the Arts’ new location in the Library and Cultural Centre.

Music legend set to rock Olive Bistro

Rock and roller Alan Gerber will bring his swagger to the Olive Bistro and Lounge, July 3.

Gerber has an extensive resume that includes working with Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Van Morrison, Leon Russell and the Doors’ legendary producer Paul Rothchild.

A prolific songwriter and engaging live performer, Gerber is currently touring in support of his latest album The Grand and the Small, a potent collection that includes poignant ballads alongside quirky satire.

Gerber’s music captures real life and weaves it into a vibrant bluesy soundtrack that has mesmerized audiences on stages as expansive as the Montreal Jazz Festival and as intimate as small local pubs.

As space is limited, reservations are required for this show. Reservations along with tickets can be bought by calling 780-852-5222. Advanced tickets are $20 while tickets at the door will be $25.

Local artist hosts closing reception

Local artist Sandy Robinson will be closing his latest painting exhibit with a wine and cheese reception on July 3 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jasper-Yellowhead Museum and Archives.

The watercolour art exhibit, which started June 1, showcased some of Jasper’s favorite awe-inspiring scenery like Pyramid, Roche Bonhomme and Edith Cavell mountains. Other pieces included life-like images of vibrant flowers and local wildlife.
