Geocaching workshop offered April 13

Millions of people around the world are adding an exciting new element to their hiking experience by participating in an outdoor game called “geocaching.” Using a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or a mobile device, participants attempt to locate containers called “geocaches” or “caches.”

On Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m. at the Seniors Lounge in the Jasper Activity Centre, Brian Catto, an interpreter with Parks Canada, will lead an interactive information session about geocaching. Catto is an experienced and passionate geocacher and will be covering the specific rules of geocaching in a national park. Participants will also be invited to take part in a geocaching excursion for an hour or two. Participants are asked to dress for the outdoors. Some GPS units will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own devices or smartphones. For more information, contact the library at 780-852-3652 or  [email protected].

Hot-in-place pavement work on Highway 16 this summer

Two sections of Highway 16 will be resurfaced in the Robson Valley using hot-in-place recycled pavement starting in June and ending in September. The first section begins at the Highway 5 and Highway 16 Junction near Tete Jaune and going east toward Jasper for 35 kilometres past Red Pass Pit Road. The second section begins at Driscoll Creek going east to Slim Creek for a distance of 21 kilometres.

“This resurfacing project will deal with sections of the highway that are showing wear and tear. The use of hot-in-place recycling means the job can be done more quickly and lowers greenhouse gas emissions at the same time. The investment of over $6 million in these two sections will allow highway users to have a smoother and safer drive,” said Shirley Bond, MLA Prince George-Valemount.
