Memorial baseball tourney with a twist
The 10th annual Emily Morgan Celebration Softball Tourney with a twist will take place Aug. 27 at Jasper’s Centennial Park.
The tournament is an opportunity to dress up in your silliest attire and raise money for a good cause.
At the age of two, Morgan began to suffer from repeated bouts of pneumonia. Stumped by her condition, doctors ordered more tests to figure out what was wrong with her, but were unable to pinpoint a cause. Finally, when she was six-years-old, doctors discovered that Morgan had cystic fibrosis.
In February 2002, at the age of nine, she underwent a double-lung transplant at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital. The operation was a success and it appeared she would make a full recovery. However, on Nov. 4, 2006, Morgan’s life came to an end at the tender age of 14.
In memory of her vibrant life, Morgan’s uncle Mychol Ormandy organized the annual softball tournament.
All proceeds from the tournament will go to the Emily Morgan Foundation, a fund that allows for the provision of monetary gifts to families whose lives are financially impacted by their children with serious illnesses or health issues.
This year’s tournament will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. A barbeque and refreshments will also be available.
Following the tournament, the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion will host a disco themed party and a silent auction, which is expected to start around 7 p.m.
Jasper Pride Festival Society hosts AGM
The Jasper Pride Festival Society is inviting the public to their fourth annual general meeting, Aug. 26.
The meeting will discuss next year’s Jasper Pride Festival, which is slated for March 9-12 with the theme “Jasper Proud and Free.”
The 2016 four-day festival saw more than 1,000 people attend 24 events throughout town—many of which were sold-out.
The meeting will also introduce attendees to the society’s newly elected board.
The society recently announced Edmonton’s Jacqui Sundquist as its new executive director.
The AGM will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be held at the Jasper Royal Canadian Legion. A casual reception will be held following the meeting. For more information visit www.jasperpride.ca.
Mountain towns supports injured local
Support for Jasperite Ryan Titchener is coming from mountain towns across the province.
Canmore’s artsPlace is hosting a fundraising night of film, Aug. 25.
The event will feature a silent auction, and screening of mountain films, including Citadel.
All proceeds will go to Titchener’s recovery fund.
On July 15, Titchener and his girlfriend, Tereza Turecká, were making their way along the west ridge of Pigeon Spire when a 300 kg boulder came loose crushing Titchener, severely injuring the 32-year-old Jasperite.
To support his recovery an online gofundme campaign was started in July. The campaign has already raised more than $27,000.
