
Police net $2,300 of drugsduring traffic stop
Jasper RCMP seized $2,300 worth of drugs during a routine traffic stop, Aug 10.
According to Jasper RCMP, officers stopped a vehicle for having a burnt out license plate light. During the traffic stop officers observed cannabis resin inside the vehicle and arrested a 26-year-old local man.
A subsequent search of the vehicle also revealed a large amount of marijuana and psilocybinmagic mushroomsas well as various drug trafficking paraphernalia. Police estimate the street value of the drugs is approximately $2,300.
As a result of this investigation, Matthew James Van Alstyne of Jasper has been charged with one count of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking, one count of possession of psilocybin for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of cannabis resin.
Van Alstyne is scheduled to appear in Jasper Provincial Court Oct. 27.
Tennis court overhaul complete
The resurfacing of the tennis court outside of the Jasper Activity Centre is now complete and open to the public.
According to Yvonne McNabb, director of culture and recreation, the new surface includes lines for tennis as well as pickleball.
The feedback that Im getting from the public already is that the surface is definitely quicker, especially for tennis, but slower for pickleball, said McNabb during a council meeting Aug. 16.
In May, the Jasper Park Tennis Club received a $39,690 grant from the provinces Community Facility Enhancement Program for the project. The municipality matched the funding dollar-for-dollarbringing the total investment to nearly $80,000.
New amphitheatre being built at Whistlers Campground
Parks Canada is building a new amphitheatre in Whistlers Campground to replace the original amphitheatre that was built in 1969. The old structure was removed in the summer of 2014 due to the withering condition of its foundation.
The new amphitheatre will be fully operational for the 2017 camping season and ready for Canadas 150th birthday celebrations, July 1.
Construction began Aug.15 and is expected to be completed by November.

Glaciers to host referee clinic
With the school year just around the corner, the Jasper Glaciers are looking for locals interested in officiating football games this season.On Aug. 28, the team will be hosting a clinic with instructors from Football Alberta to train people to become certified level one football officials.
The clinic will be held at cole Desrochers from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. There is no cost to attend the clinic as long as you agree to help with at least one game this season.
According to coach Chuck MacKinnon, last year the team had to bring in officials from as far away as Whitecourt, straining the teams financial resources.
To help cover expenses, the team has a new sponsorship plan with local business owners. Jack Wenaus of Sun Life Financial stepped up to sponsor the officials clinic.
