RCMP elevate charges in death of former Jasperite

Edson RCMP elevated charges to second-degree murder in connection with the death of former Jasperite Preston Goulet, Nov. 26.

The suspect was originally arrested and charged with aggravated assault after Goulet suffered serious injuries during a fight at the Moose Creek Hotel in Edson, Nov. 11. Goulet succumbed to his injuries and passed away in hospital Nov. 15.

An autopsy was completed by the Edmonton medical examiner’s office on Nov. 17, where it was determined Goulet’s death was a homicide, pending the results of additional testing. After gathering more evidence, police consulted with the crown prosecutor and upgraded the charge to second degree murder.

Christopher Ronald Edward Harrison, of Edson, was arrested by police and charged with the second degree murder of Goulet.

He was remanded into custody and was scheduled to appear in provincial court in Edson on Dec. 1.

Fitness class to donate money to December Project

The Fitness Network is hosting a bootcamp on Dec. 5 to raise money for the December Project.

The class will be held in the lower level of the Jasper Activity Centre from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. and all drop in fees will be donated to the project.

The December Project, which began last winter, is the brainchild of Jasperite Joe Urie.

The goal of the project is two-fold: to get people off the couch for 30 minutes of exercise a day and to raise funds for two local causes—the Caring Community Fund and the effort to bring a Syrian refugee family to Jasper.

Participants in the fitness class will also receive a complimentary three-punch pass and $5 from every drop in fee in December will also be donated to the project.
