Second Syrian refugee family arrives

After a long and arduous journey the second Syrian refugee family finally arrived in Jasper, July 25.

Omar Al Homosh and his wife Rola Al Dakhil, along with their three young boys, were met at the Edmonton airport by Rod and Beth Tower, and their son Riley, who sponsored the family. Gail Millard, the refugee coordinator for the Anglican Diocese of Edmonton, also met the family when they arrived.

In May, the family had been provisionally approved to come to Canada and was waiting for their medical exams to be processed before they could begin their journey from Cairo, Egypt to Jasper.

It’s the second Syrian refugee family to arrive in Jasper over the past six months.

Habitat hosts show at new cultural centre

If you combine a bit of jazz, a dash of country, a teaspoon of ska and some down home Prairie lyrics then you’ve got Saskatoon’s Whiskey Jerks.

In support of their debut album Neat, the band is spending the dog days of summer touring across Alberta and British Columbia, including a stop in Jasper. The band will bring down the house at Habitat for the Arts’ new location, 500 Robson St., July 29 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $20 and can be bought at the Habitat for the Arts.

Due to limited space tickets will not be sold at the door.

Jasper Library and Cultural Centre hosts soft opening

If you haven’t checked out the new Jasper Library and Cultural Centre now is your chance. On August 4 from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. the building will host a soft opening for locals.

Along with housing an impressive amount of books, the building is also home to Jasper Artists Guild, Habitat for the Arts, l’Association Canadienne-Française de l’Alberta (ACFA) and municipal council meetings.

The grand opening event is scheduled for September 30 to coincide with Alberta Culture Days, which takes place from September 30 to October 2.
