It’s almost Environment Week, and in order to celebrate, the municipality has lined up a handful of events from June 8-11.

June 8 has been declared Clean Air Day across Canada—which has spawned Wild Wacky Walking Wednesday here in Jasper. In recognition of the day, the municipality is calling on students to walk, bike or design a crazy conveyance to get to school.

The following day, June 9, the municipality will be teaming up with Parks Canada to pick up litter along Jasper’s main roadways.

Heading into the weekend, June 11, the town has organized an electronic and household hazardous waste/community shred event.

Residents are encouraged to stop by the Anglican Church Hall parking lot from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in order to properly dispose of the bulky waste or to safely shred and recycle.

Two more bridges under construction

Parks Canada started rehabilitation work on two more bridges in Jasper National Park, June 1.

Work on the Fiddle River Bridge—49 kilometres east of town along Highway 16— and the Snaring River Bridge—16 kilometres east also along Highway 16—is expected to continue until November.

There will be two-way traffic with lane reductions during construction. Work will occur Monday to Saturday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Speed reductions to 50 km/h can be expected in both work zones with traffic control personnel on site.

No work will be done on statutory holidays and long weekends, however, lane width reductions will be in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

According to a press release, delays will vary according to the intensity of construction and volume of traffic.

There is also work still being done on the Miette Bridge, the Athabasca Bridge and the two Rocky River bridges. These four construction projects are also located along Highway 16 and traffic control measures are in place. Expect delays.

Biking for a cause

The North 400 bike tour is seeking cyclists who are keen to make the 376 kilometre trek from Jasper to Prince George, B.C. in 24 hours, Aug. 4.

Aside from bragging rights, the lengthy voyage’s main purpose is to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. All funds will go specifically to children that are battling cancer.

The registration deadline for the ride is June 17. For more information and registration forms check out: www.north400.com.
