After reviewing the building, architects brought mechanical issues to the municipality’s attention because the mechanical system is “not doing the job it’s supposed to do,” said CAO Peter Waterworth, adding that he “can’t get into specifics.”

A definite date or time frame for the finished library is up in the air, and it’s guaranteed not to be within the next few months. While the mechanical problem continues to be addressed, progress will be limited.

“There’s no point in painting walls if you have to take something else out,” said Waterworth.

In July 2012, the library’s budget was raised to $8.5 million, a million dollars over the original budget. It’s too soon to know, let alone say, if more money is required to fix the mechanical issues, he said.

That is a bridge to be crossed when the time comes. “If we come to that, we will judge on the particular circumstances ... we’re aware of the ‘bridge’ and are waiting with attention to deal with it when it gets there.”

Adding to the library and preserving the existing heritage building has already given way to unexpected expenditures. This included additional structural framing, leveling old floors, stabilizing a crumbling chimney and asbestos removal.

Once complete, the library will also house the Jasper Artists Guild, Habitat for the Arts and L’association canadienne-française de l’Alberta. A video conference room, sitting area, cafe, office for mayor and council and multipurpose room will also be included.

“It’s longer than we all had hoped for, but we’re working together to have a building that people will be proud of,” said Waterworth.
