Florence Foster Jenkins follows the life a New York heiress and socialite who pursued her dream to become an opera singer.

Despite achieving some notoriety in the 1940s, this isn’t your normal success story. Every time Florence opened her mouth to sing, what she heard was beautiful—even angelic. However, to everyone else it was hilariously awful.

Her husband and manager, St. Clair Bayfield (played by Hugh Grant), an aristocratic English actor, was determined to protect his beloved Florence from the truth. But when Florence decided to give a public concert at Carnegie Hall in 1944, St. Clair knew he was in for a challenge.

The film, which was directed by Stephen Frears, drew mostly positive feedback after it premiered in London at the Belfast Film Festival in April. Florence Foster Jenkins was theatrically released in North America in August, grossing $44.2 million.

On Rotten Tomatoes, a website devoted to film reviews, the film has an approval rating of 86 per cent, based on 175 reviews, with an average rating of 7/10. The site’s critical consensus reads, “Florence Foster Jenkins makes poignant, crowd-pleasing ‘dramedy’ out of its stranger-than-fiction tale and does its subject justice with a reliably terrific turn from star Meryl Streep.â€

In the Los Angeles Review of Books, the film was linked to Hamlet and The Magic Flute, stating the film “is neither tragedy nor farce, but a passable admixture of the two, defining both negatively.â€

To catch the film, head over to the Chaba Theatre on Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10.
