More than a dozen rock climbers scaled the bouldering room in a friendly competition at the Jasper Activity Centre Jan. 15.
Dubbed Jaspers Boulder Battle, rock climbers had two hours to try 22 different bouldering problems that varied in difficulty.
The more difficult the problem, the more points climbers could score, explained Francois Laplante, one of three volunteers who helped organized the competition.
Points were also allocated depending on how many attempts it took a climber to complete each problem.
Its called a scrambled format. Basically climbers have a certain amount of time to climb as much as they can. The goal is not to climb everything, but to try a good amount of routes and then at the end we count their six best, said Laplante.
The winner of the competition was Owen Gregg. Josh Dunn placed second and Brad Foss and James Brown tied for third.
In addition to the competition, organizers also had a draw to ensure everyone had a chance to win something. Cameron Mitchell came up the big winner, winning a rock climbing harness.
To get the bouldering room ready for the competition, Laplante, Jon Bowley and Greg Raymond, spent three 10-hour days setting up the boulder problems.
To participate in the competition, competitors each paid $15, which will go towards equipment to improve the bouldering room.
Our priority for right now is to buy new mats, said Laplante, adding all the prizes were donated by Gravity Gear, Arcteryx and Flashed.
