Grade 6 students from cole Desrochers transformed into elves, Dec. 16, and spent the morning wrapping gifts at the McCready Centre.

The presents, all beautifully adorned in Christmas paper, will be delivered to 53 families in need this holiday season as part of the annual Santas Anonymous campaign.

The students, as well as several adult volunteers, were kept busy wrapping gifts, filling food hampers and organizing winter clothing.

Im blown away by the generosity every year, said Ann Thomas, organizer for Santas Anonymous, speaking not only about the students, but of the community members who donated to the campaign.

She said just about every family will receive a few toys as well as a food hamper, which includes a turkey and all the fixings to make a complete Christmas dinner.

Thomas said she wouldnt be able to keep Santas Anonymous going year-after-year without the support of the community, which supports various fundraisers throughout the months of November and December.

I just want to thank the community for once again supporting our fundraisers, said Thomas, adding many people also privately donated cash and gift cards allowing her to buy a few things locally.

For the students, wrapping presents was more than just an excuse to get out of class, it was part of their social studies curriculum, explained Catherine Stastny, the students Grade 6 teacher.

In the social studies curriculum we have to get involved in the community, so I thought this was a great opportunity for them to get to know about Santas Anonymous, said Statsny.
