The Jasper Skatepark Committee isn’t wasting any time.

Just over a month after Parks Canada approved a permanent location to build a concrete skatepark, the community group intends to keep the momentum going by hosting a barbeque and fundraiser Oct. 7.

“Right now we’re trying to solicit all kinds of help,” said Anna Declercq, a teen and youth outreach worker for Community Outreach Services.

“The skatepark is a way bigger project than me and a couple teens can take on so we really need some more young adults and adults to get on board and be part of this.”

To date, the group has already raised $6,000 and hopes local businesses and non-profit groups will get on board.

The cost to build a skatepark varies, but can reach as much as $1 million.

The barbeque runs from noon to 2 p.m. A hotdog, chips and a drink cost $5.

Last week the 51°µÍř caught up with some of the teens that use the skatepark to find out why it’s important to them.

“This skatepark is getting old and really boring so it would be nice to have a new skatepark that would be better for biking, scootering and skateboarding.”
