Despite unseasonably warm weather, students from École Desrochers and Jasper Elementary School celebrated winter, Feb. 17 and 18, during a winter carnival, inspired by the annual Carnaval de Québec.
The kids moved through a course of different games and fun activities on Centennial Field, participating in a tug-o-war, sled pull, sumo wrestling, bean bag toss and river crossing, among other activities.
Much to the delight of the students, Bonhomme, the official winter carnival mascot joined in the fun, joining a team for the tug-o-war, bouncing around in the sumo ring and handing out high-fives and hugs.
In Quebec, Bonhomme is a celebrity. Since first appearing at the carnival in 1955, the smily-faced snowman has been its ambassador and a public personality.
