While it’s not unusual for the students of Jasper Elementary School and École Desrochers to hustle to school by foot or bike, many of their modes of transportation got a whole lot more creative as they made their way to class June 8.
In celebration of environmental week and to mark Clean Air Day across Canada the municipality challenged students to walk, bike or design a creative way to get to school.
Known locally as Wild Wacky Walking Wednesday, many of the students took the municipality up on the challenge by donning wacky costumes or decking out their bikes with stuffed animals and streamers.
Others scrapped their bikes completely and showed up by jumping rope, using metal cans for makeshift stilts or rowing a cardboard canoe into the playground.
Other events for environmental week included Stewardship Day, which sent out roughly 100 staff from the municipality and Parks Canada to cleanup litter along the park’s highways. There was also an opportunity for the public to properly dispose of electronics and household hazardous waste.
