Syrian family one step closer to Jasper life

Un-syriaIt is likely only a matter of weeks, if not days, before Hassan, Omayea and Reham will call Jasper home.

The family of three is among the first wave of Syrian refugees the federal government has approved to come to Canada.

They got the stamp of approval, said Nancy Addison, who has been spearheading the communitys effort to help the family resettle in Jasper.

Its now a matter of when theyre coming, not if, she said, adding they were approved Dec. 31 and will likely be boarding a plane bound for Canada very soon.

To prepare for the familys imminent arrival, Addison has been collecting everyday household items to furnish their home.

As well as collecting donations from the community, Addison recently made a trip to an Arabic store in Edmonton to buy $300 worth of food to make sure the family has some items they are familiar with when they arrive.

Were pretty much ready, said Addison, adding she has a few last minute things to do to get the house ready and is still looking for an ironing board.

She said the community has raised nearly $38,000 over the last two months for the two families that are coming to Jasperthe second family is being privately sponsored by Jasperites Rod and Beth Tower.

The bulk of the money, nearly $24,000, was collected by St. Mary & St. George Anglican Church, which has been providing charitable receipts to donors.

Another $8,000 was collected through a trust fund set up at Servus Credit Union and an additional $4,500 has been donated through an online Go Fund Me campaign set up by the Towers, who are privately sponsoring a Syrian family of five.

Were aiming for $70,000, so were more than half way, but as I said before I dont know if we will need that much because were getting everything pretty much for free, weve hardly bought anything. Weve bought food and were paying rent, said Addison.

51做厙 of the familys pending arrival comes after the federal government missed its revised target to resettle 10,000 Syrian refugees by Dec. 31, 2015.

According to a press conference on New Years Eve, Immigration Minister John McCallum said 10,700 applications had been fully processed, but only 6,000 refugees were expected to arrive in Canada by Jan. 1. The remaining 4,000 refugees are expected to arrive by mid-January.

During the press conference, McCallum said the government is still on track to resettle 25,000 refugees by the end of February and the government had identified 25,000 refugees for processing as of Dec. 24, 2015.

Whether Omar Al Homosh and his wife Rola, as well as their three young sons, are part of that second cohort of refugees remains to be seen, but the Tower family is remaining hopeful.

Its moving along, but its hard to throw a dart at the board and hit the target every time, said Rod, explaining it will be at least another four to six weeks before the family arrives.

According to Rod, Omar was recently reunited with his family in Egypt after being separated in Turkey due to visa complications; the familys paperwork was filed with Canadian authorities this week.

He was separated 241 days from his family so hes pretty excited to be back with them and were trying to keep him enthusiastic and keep up with the paperwork, said Rod.

In addition to the communitys support, Beth informed Jasper Elementary School about the familys anticipated arrival and the Jasper Adult Learning Centre has applied for funding through the provinces Alberta Refugee Resettlement Grant Initiative.

The initiative is designed to help ensure municipalities, immigration agencies and private sponsors are prepared to receive refugees and ensure the families have the support they need to successfully integrate into the community.

Everything seems to be falling into place and maybe Im too much of an optimist, but I dont really have a lot of worries, I think its going to be great, said Addison, acknowledging it will take some time for the families to adjust to life in Jasper and to learn English.

The biggest thing people can do is just be friendly. It will help them get over all the trauma theyve been through.

To support both families, a silent auction and dessert night, called Sweets for Syria, is being organized at Karouzos Steakhouse Jan. 14. Doors open at 7 p.m., however the silent auction begins at noon with bidding closing at 9:30 p.m.

There will also be live music provided by Monika Schaefer and Brian Lackey and a cash bar serving wine and special coffee. Tickets are $15 at the door.
