Since then, Howelko was finally able to return to her family’s home on Nov. 1, 2012 from the Selkirk Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) Program. The family was grateful to have her home, especially in time for the holidays.
“Our girl is still fighting like crazy and continues to make tiny baby steps of progress each and every week,” her mom Debbie Howelko said in a letter.
Howelko does some self-feeding and whispering and mouthing of words. “Britt is getting physically stronger, she can stand in a standing frame and the head, neck and trunk control get stronger all the time,” said her mom.
It’s been a fight to get Howelko the services she requires because she doesn’t have insurance, said her mom. There have been many phone calls and lobbying in support of her daughter’s care.
Howelko attends the Movement Centre in Winnipeg two afternoons a week and a private physiotherapy clinic at Selkirk three times a week. She also receives speech therapy once a week.
Thanks to a fundraising social, the family purchased a wheelchair accessible van that transports Howelko to all her appointments.
The installation of a ceiling mounted H-track lift in her room and the main bathroom has also provided more freedom. This allows her to move anywhere in the room and also have baths at home. Up until this point, she travelled to Selkirk twice a week for baths.
The Howelko family was also approved for “family managed home care” which allots them 56 hours a week to hire and train caregivers.
The Whistle Stop continues to support Howelko in her recovery and has planned some events to help contribute to her trust fund.
The second annual Hockey for Hope tournament will happen during the ATCO Family Street Party on Jan. 19. To participate, it’s $10 per person, which also includes a pint at the Whistle Stop afterwards.
Whistle Stop is also hosting a barbecue during the street party. Hamburgers and pop will be sold, as well as ski and snowboard helmets and “For Britt” stickers to raise awareness about wearing helmets while skiing or boarding.
Additionally, a draw prize raffle runs until Jan. 31. Prizes include a 50-inch plasma Panasonic HD TV, a two-night stay at the Banff Inn and a two-night weekend stay, including brunch for two at the Radisson in Edmonton. A five dollar ticket gives you five chances to win.
Howelko’s family appreciates all the support they’ve received.
“I also want to say thank you to everyone who has supported us over the past year with the cards, letters, phone calls, meals, friendship and prayers, as well as the overwhelming financial donations given towards Brittany’s trust fund,” said Debbie Howelko.
