The Village of Boyle saw an evacuation order issued in May as the southern wildfire continued to grow.

Wildfire season got off to a destructive start in Alberta with hundreds already seeing evacuation orders in the northern part of the province.

Residents of both the Village of Boyle and areas of Sturgeon County were forced out of their homes this month due to threatening fires. Now the province is stepping in to help ease the costs associated with such displacements.

The Alberta government announced on Thursday that it will be providing emergency evacuation payments for anyone who is forced from their home for an extended period of time.

“Being forced from your home is one of the most difficult things a family can face. Our government is here to support Albertans every step of the way – helping cover urgent costs and providing reassurance during an incredibly stressful time," said Premier Danielle Smith. "We’re committed to ensuring families have the help they need, when they need it most.”

Every adult who has been evacuated for seven days or more is eligible to receive a one-time payment of $1,250. An additional $500 for each dependent child under the age of 18 will also be available to evacuees.

These payments aim to help residents cover the costs of travel, temporary accommodations, food and any other necessities while being away from home.

“Wildfires are a reality of life in Alberta’s forests, but no Albertan should have to face them alone," said Minister of Forestry and Parks Todd Loewen. "Our government is standing with affected communities every step of the way – supporting firefighting efforts on the ground, providing critical information and ensuring families have the support they need to get through these challenging times.”

Residents can apply for the payments online up to 60 days after the start date of their evacuation order and payments will be made via e-transfer within 24 hours of submitting the application.

Most insurance policies will also provide coverage for additional living expenses and residents are encouraged to check in with their policies during an evacuation order.

For the most up-to-date information on wildfires and evacuation notices, all Albertans are encouraged to download the Alberta Emergency Alert app or check the government's website at alberta.ca/emergency.
