Seven new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Jasper today (Nov. 24), with two recoveries, bringing the active case total to 26.
One of those cases is an individual from the Municipality of Jasper's Out of School Care program, interim chief administrative officer John Greathead confirmed today.
In a letter to staff shared with the 51°µÍø, Greathead said any staff members that were deemed a close contact of the positive case are self isolating and will get tested.
The Out of School care program remains open and children in the other cohort are not considered to be at risk in relation to this case.
For confidentiality reasons, no further information about this case, or any other Jasper case, will be released by Alberta Health. This includes whether cases are from a known source or community transmission.
New restrictions in Alberta
Alberta has declared a state of public health emergency due to rising COVID-19 numbers in the province, and mandatory measures to address rising cases come into effect starting Nov. 24.Â
Across Alberta, indoor social gatherings have been banned and outdoor gatherings are restricted to a maximum of 10 attendees. There is also a maximum of 10 people allowed at wedding or funeral services.
Schools will close early across the province. On Nov. 30, Grades 7 to 12 will end in-person schooling, and Kindergarten to Grade 6 will end on Dec. 18.
Premier Jason Kenney said this is because teenagers are more likely to transmit the virus.
Areas on the enhanced list, or ‘purple zone’ on Alberta Health’s COVID-19 status map, will have restricted access to some businesses and services from Friday, Nov. 27.
With more than 10 active cases and a rate of more than 50 cases per 100,000 population, Jasper is on this enhanced list.

Businesses that are closed for in-person service include:
- Banquet halls, conference centres, trade shows, auditoria and concert venues, non-approved/licensed markets, community centres
- Children’s play places or indoor playgrounds
- All levels of sport (professional, semi-professional, junior, collegiate/universities and amateur). Exemptions may be considered.
Restaurants, bars, pubs and lounges will be open with restrictions if they follow all public health guidance in place including:
- Maximum of six people from the same immediate household at a table and no movement between tables.
- People who live alone can meet with up to two non-household contacts as long as they’re the same two throughout the duration of these restrictions
- Only seated eating and drinking is permitted. No other services or entertainment will be allowed, including billiards, games or darts.
- Liquor can be sold until 10 p.m. and food-serving establishments must close to in person-dining at 11 p.m. Liquor sales apply to casinos, but casinos are not required to close at 11 p.m.
