Marmot Basin is officially open for the season.

The Jasper ski hill’s lifts were opened at 9 a.m. on Friday by new president and CEO Jason Paterson.

And skiers and snowboarders were keen to get first tracks with a line-up forming well before the lifts started moving.

This year’s November 8 opening date was Marmot’s earliest in 56 years.

The date was confirmed on October 31 and the hill has seen more than 25 centimetres of snow since then, bringing the opening date total snowfall to 71 centimetres.

It was a relatively warm day on the hill at minus one degree.

Two runs were open on the day: Tranquilizer and Sleepy Hollow.

But despite only the lower half of the hill being open open, skiers were happy to lap the course and were kept entertained in the park.

This weekend, the upper mountain and Eagle Ridge will be open, too.
