Jasper and Hinton may experience an extended power outage as over 100 wildfires rage across the province and tens of thousands flee their homes.
On Saturday afternoon, the Municipality of Jasper warned in a Facebook post that this was a quickly evolving situation and there was no estimate on when or if a power outage would occur.
It also advised residents to prepare for an extended outage.
Evacuees from Edson and Yellowhead County were advised to prepare by filling up with fuel and getting basic supplies.
The Reception Centre at the Jasper Activity Centre (305 Bonhomme Street) remains open for evacuees who require information or assistance.
Evacuees who have not yet registered can call 1-833-334-4630, unless they have already registered in-person either in Hinton (Dr. Duncan Murray Recreation Centre, 805 Switzer Drive) or Jasper (305 Bonhomme Street).
All evacuation orders issued by Yellowhead County and the Town of Edson remain in place.
Jasper residents can follow for updates.
The Town of Hinton is advising residents to prepare to shelter in place and not fill their vehicles at this time in order to give evacuees a chance to do so.
No fire is currently threatening Hinton, but the town officials warned that key power infrastructure is threatened in the Edson area that could affect both Hinton and Jasper.
Alberta Wildfire is also warning that the use of recreational drones over wildfires is dangerous, illegal and could result in a fine of up to $15,000 for putting aircraft and people at risk.
