KANANASKIS – The no-fly zone around Kananaksis County has been lifted and the no-go security zone covering large swaths of the area to protect world leaders will no longer be in effect by the end of day Wednesday (June 18).

With the so-called controlled access zone ending at 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, officials say accreditation will no longer be required and there will be full access along Highway 40 from the Trans-Canada Highway to the winter closure gate at the junction of Kananaskis Lakes Trail.

The Highwood Pass stretch of Highway 40 will reopen on Saturday, June 21, for all vehicle traffic.

For the latest updates on the status of trails, trailheads and day use areas in Kananaskis, the RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) asks visitors and residents to check out the Alberta Parks website.

“There will be a staged reopening of some sites to ensure a safe and sustainable reopening and restoration,” states the news release.

The G7 designated demonstration zones in Calgary and Banff are also shut down.

“As foreign dignitaries continue to depart Alberta, residents in these communities may see some continued security presence for the coming days as the ISSG clears equipment, and police vehicles, and assists with clean up duties at designated sites,” states the news release.

The G7 Summit ran June 15-17.
