Alberta's chief medical officer of health has reminded the public that national parks are still closed.

Alberta's chief medical officer of health has reminded the public that national parks are still closed.

"Now is not the time to visit mountain communities for the weekend," said Dr Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health for Alberta in a tweet May 1 - a message echoed from Jasper mayor Richard Ireland.

As part of the Government of Alberta's phased reopening plan, access to provincial parks and public lands will be reopened May 4, private and municipal campgrounds and parks can open with physical distancing restrictions, and golf courses can open with restrictions.

But national parks remain closed to visitors, Hinshaw said in her tweet.

And at national parks remain in place until further notice.

"We continue to assess the suspension of visitor services and the closure of facilities in light of advice from public health experts and other regional and local considerations," said Jasper National Park's May 1 update.

Vehicle access by visitors, visitor services and visitor facilities are closed until further notice.

Camping, group activities and events are suspended until at least May 31, 2020.
