Jasper has one confirmed case of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.

Alberta Health's shows a breakdown of cases in the province. It lists one case in Jasper.

Alberta Health would not release any further details about the Jasper case, such as if it was travel-related or community spread, or if the person had spent time in the Jasper community.

"For patient privacy and confidentiality reasons, AHS is unable to provide details about any local cases," said Erin Lawrence, a Senior Communications Advisor for Alberta Health Services in an email.

There are no reported cases in the areas around Jasper like Hinton, Banff and Grande Cache. The closest are in Canmore, where there are two confirmed cases, and the outskirts of Edmonton.

This afternoon (Saturday, March 21) 31 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Alberta, bringing the total 226.

The province suspects up to 16 of the total cases were due to community transmission.

Eleven people are in hospital, six are in Intensive Care Units and there have been no further deaths in Alberta, leaving the total at one.

Albertans are reminded of the importance of social distancing as an important way to minimize the spread of COVID-19.

Albertans are discouraged from attending large shopping malls and other large public spaces, unless necessary.

Worship services may still take place this weekend, provided gatherings are fewer than 50 people.

Those who attend must practise social distancing and proper hand hygiene. Those who are sick with a fever, cough or even mild cold-like symptoms must stay home and away from others.

The most important measures that Albertans can take to prevent respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, is to practise good hygiene.

This includes cleaning your hands regularly for at least 20 seconds, avoiding touching your face, coughing or sneezing into your elbow or sleeve, disposing of tissues appropriately, and staying home and away from others if you are sick.
