Dear friends,
I know that many people in West Yellowhead are struggling to deal with new realities during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we face these difficult times together, I would like to share some information and resources that are available to support Albertans.
Public health officials here in Alberta are working tirelessly to bring up-to-date information on COVID-19 to the public. I highly recommend that you visit for the most up-to-date information.
Our government has declared a Public Health State of Emergency. This decision was not taken lightly, but will be essential to ensure that officials have the resources and authority to contain the spread of illness.
Our government recognizes that many Albertans are facing the loss of employment due to the ongoing crisis. Beginning the week of March 23, individuals meeting public health requirements to self-isolate or who are the primary caregiver for someone in self-isolation will be able to apply for Emergency Isolation Support. This fund will provide a one-time payment of $1146, and will be deposited into bank accounts by the end of the week. This program will provide temporary relief until federal support begins in April.
In addition, all Albertans will be able to defer utility bills for their homes, residences, and small businesses for the next 90 days. At this time, no one will be cut off from their electricity or. In the difficult weeks to come, our government will continue to put measures in place that support Albertans.
Our government has also increased funding to charities and social services in Alberta to help protect the most vulnerable during this pandemic. I’m proud to have been appointed to the new Premier’s Council on Charities and Civil Society, where I will have the opportunity to voice Albertan’s concerns and advise on how our government can address them.
Public health officials agree that social distancing will save lives in the weeks and months to come.Â
Some ways to practice social distancing include maintaining two metres of distance from others, and avoiding unnecessary activities like dinner parties and social gatherings. One of the most effective ways to prevent contracting the virus is simply washing our hands as often as possible
Together, we can seize this critical moment to slow the spread of COVID-19, and protect those who are most at risk, if we are willing to adjust our lifestyles for a short period of time.
We have a challenge ahead of us, but together, we will weather this storm.
