“Oh my God, it was so, so, so good.”
The words of Lynn Wannop, co-chairwoman of the tenth Jasper Pride festival.
“It was by far the best one yet,” she said. “We say that every year, but oh my God. Being the tenth anniversary we had some special events and special thank yous, stuff like that. It was the overall feeling, and the organisation just worked this year. Everything went too smoothly, it was wonderful.”
Four fabulous fun-filled days marked the ten-year anniversary of Jasper Pride this weekend.
Revellers packed dance parties, live shows, food tours, family events and hang-outs for teenagers to celebrate being proud and free.
And the peak of the festival was the National Derby-themed Pride Party on Saturday night at the Activity Centre.
Performing at this year’s party was illusionist Toni Lester Van Blam, male burlesque dancers Man Up!, Vancouver’s “hottest, queerest event band” Queer as Funk, and DJ Thomas Culture.
And prizes were awarded for the best and most creative costumes - and best hat.
Wannop said: “My highlight was definitely Saturday night by far, it was unreal. It is the climax at the end of the weekend.
"The hats were amazing, the entertainment was amazing. It was a good mix.
“The band, Queer as Funk, they are so amazing they had the room totally geared up and dancing. It was such a positive energy.”
Marmot Basin hosted a Pride party on Saturday, too with a rainbow race, and a barbecue and DJ at the mid-chalet.
Wannop said: “The community is so supportive and I can’t get over it. I love where we live, everyone is so awesome.”
