Alberta has now confirmed 871 cases of COVID-19.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, chief medical officer of health for Alberta, announced 117 new cases in the province today (April 1) after labs completed 4,500 tests in 24 hours.

She said the large increase in cases today was due to Alberta labs completing a backlog of tests, now they are working at full capacity. About 98 per cent of the tests were negative.

Ninety-four of Alberta's total confirmed cases are suspected to be from community transmission - an increase of 24 from yesterday.

Sixty-two people are in hospital, there have been 20 ICU admissions and 11 deaths, an increase of two from yesterday.

The two people who died yesterday were a man in his 80s in the North Zone and a man in his 80s from Calgary.

"My heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those individuals," said Hinshaw. "Every loss of live is a tragedy, whether from COVID-19 or other illness.

"This is a call to action to do all you can to help stop the spread."

Four cases are confirmed in Jasper, out of 51 in the North Zone and 871 in Alberta. Geographic information is missing for seven cases in the province.
