The trio jams with two guitars and a set of African drums. “We all play a little bit of everything and we will all trade instruments and make it really fun.”
The audience is guaranteed to do some foot stomping and hand clapping, she adds.
All are welcome to join in the fun. “The show will be for everyone. We don’t want to just attract a French crowd.
“Two years ago when we played at the De’d Dog it was great to see such a cultural variety.”
St. Jean Baptiste Day is officially June 24, but festivities will begin early in Jasper with a June 21 celebration. The festivities happen alongside June solstice, said Flipo-Bergeron. “I’ve lived in many French communities and only then I realized that St. Jean Baptiste is celebrated everywhere and they use the name St. Jean Baptiste, but they also use the solstice celebration as well.”
There are a few different stories about how St. Jean Baptiste Day began in Canada, she said.
“When it started back in France it was a monarchy celebration and it was mainly religious and related to the solstice festival.” The monarchy and high-ranking people in France celebrated the feast day of St. Jean Baptiste with their subjects.
When French colonists arrived in Canada, the tradition followed. “It was more a national birthday for Quebecers or French Canadians,” said Flipo-Bergeron. “And that’s when it became a national party.”
St. Jean Baptiste Day has been a statutory holiday in Quebec since 1977 and serves as a day of celebration for everyone and not just those of French Canadian or Catholic origin.
