Businesses and organizations in Alberta can now use a government-supported app to scan QR codes in order to verify their patrons’ vaccination status.
The AB Covid Records Verifier app is available for download on Apple and Android devices through the respective app stores.
“Albertans and businesses asked for a safe and secure app to make it easier to check proof of vaccination and today we have delivered,” said Premier Jason Kenney in a news release.
“Enhanced vaccine records with a QR code and easy-to-use validator app are important tools in support of our commitment to protect the health-care system, slow the spread and increase vaccination rates.”
Other forms of proof of vaccination will continue to be accepted until Nov. 15.
When a QR code is scanned, a green check mark will verify the proof of vaccination.
A person’s name and date of birth will also be displayed, and businesses are asked to check this personal information against other identification.
The province says the app doesn’t store personal information and does not require an internet connection to operate once downloaded.
Each QR code contains a secure digital signature that verifies it’s provided by Alberta Health, which the government assures is hard to forge.
This technology is also used for banking and other industries.
Should a person not meet the vaccination requirement or if the QR code is tampered with, the record will show as invalid when scanned.
Albertans can get their enhanced vaccine record with a QR code online at without creating an account.
A printed version can be requested at no cost from a local registry agent office or by calling 811.
