Jasper, you are in for a treat!

As part of the RE-Animate the Arts program, Habitat for the Arts has partnered with Arts Jasper and Break-A-Leg Theatre to present their first theatre show since January 2020.

The RE-Animate program is funded by Canadian Heritage and allows Habitat to give local artists the support to get back to their canvases, their music, their writing and even their stages.

What would a re-animation be without theatre, says Habitat. You may not realize it but you use theatre tools everyday in day-to-day decision making and relationships. This is one of the reasons why Habitat joined forces with Arts Jasper 12 years ago to support Sonia Deleo when she fired up community theatre with the Jasper Theatre Company. Like day-to-day life, theatre since 2010 has had many ups and downs. Sonia, like many of the original troupe, has moved to different stages.

When we sought to re-animate the theatre this year, we put out a call of interest and found Alyssa Buzenus, who will be working with Emerson Gibbons, to take on the organization of Improv and Theatre Game nights. As with all the genres, we are supporting with this grant we sought youth and adult representation. Alyssa has a strong theatre background and stage experience and is taking initiatives to RE-Animate theatre.

Jasper is no stranger to the theatre arts with a few names coming quickly to mind Elena Kellis, Erin Karpluk and there is promise in some local youth like Emerson Gibbons. Who will be representing Jasper this spring in one, or possibly two, one-act festivals?

Habitat for the Arts welcomes you to connect with Alyssa to engage in theatre in Jasper this spring.

Gibbons, having graced some Break-A-Leg stages, will be the MC for the Feb. 26 presentation of You Cant Get There From Here.

Break-A-Leg Theatre Company has been entertaining audiences with comedy, dramatic and musical performances since 1996. Based in Hinton, this non-profit collection of thespians consistently delivers memorable live community theatre.

The play is set at the Mavis Garner Bed and Breakfast. This is not the sort of place youd find on a freeway or a map. Thats because they get most of their customers from cars disabled when they hit the pothole on Main Street.

Scandal-sheet reporter Arthur Lyman decides to do an expose on the pothole scam and checks into the bed and breakfast. During his stay he's fined eight times, dragged across town by the local watchdog and fired from his job. What else could he do but fall in love with one of the proprietors?

When his boss shows up and takes over the story, hes treated to scenes from Shakespeare, slipshod seances and a witch who can't keep her hexes straight.

This two-hour comedy is sure to make us smile as we enjoy a return to live productions.

You can get tickets at Tekarra Color or online. Doors at the Jasper Activity Centre Main Hall open at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, Charcuterie-style dining with the show to start at 7 p.m.
