Sunny skies and cool temperatures make for beautiful days at Maligne Lake.

And residents from Alpine Summit Seniors Lodge caught such a day when they went for a trip there last Thursday.

Seniors put on their winter warmers and hopped on the lodges bus, spotting moose on their ride down to the lake.

And after lunch at the Waffle Hut, the seniors climbed aboard a tour boat for a comped trip across the water.

I think everyone had been on it before, lots of them were sharing stories about canoeing on Maligne Lake or going to Coronet (at the south end of the lake) or camping, said Meghan Gifford, activities coordinator and assistant manager of Alpine Summit.

One of the couples spent anniversaries there, rented the boat and went out just the two of them.

It doesn't matter if you see it 100 times, its just spectacular.

Gifford said the seniors loved spending time on the docks and at Spirit Island.

She said one of the highlights of the trip was resident Heinz riding on the back dock of the boat across the lake.

He is in a wheelchair but is very adventurous, she said.

We were going to leave the wheelchair on the dock and transfer him into a seat but he asked if he could go on the back dock and they accommodated it.

We lifted the wheelchair and he rode the whole way out and back on the back dock - they dont usually allow that but I was out there with him.

We sat back there and he is a great accomplished photographer and he just snapped pictures.

Gifford said the day was absolutely spectacular, with calm water and crisp, sunny weather.

It is a really great opportunity to get out into the backcountry, she said.

It is a great way for people with mobility issues who would never have the opportunity to do something like that, to go onto the boat.

Alpine seniors also went on a trip to the Jasper SkyTram in August and had a tea party at Jasper Park Lodge.

We are always up to something, said Gifford.

On Thursday, October 24 there will be an Oktoberfest-themed lunch at Alpine Summit.

And there will be a Halloween party on October 31 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
