Love and passion boil over in Valentines Day Film Club selection

Valentines Day is about to heat up with Cold War.

On February 14, Jasper Film Club audiences will be treated to a near-perfect film, according to critic Ann Hornaday.

The Washington Post calls Cold War an artfully crafted, flawlessly acted meditation on love, memory and invented history thats both deeply personal and politically attuned.

Set against the backdrop of the 1950s Cold War in Poland, two people of differing backgrounds and temperaments begin an almost impossible romance.

The lovers are Wiktor and Zula, a classically gorgeous couple from the opposite sides of the tracks. They first meet deep in the dilapidated countryside of the post-World War II Poland.

They exchange suggestive glances and embark on a stormy affair that disastrously evolves over two isolating decades and numerous unsympathetic locales across Europe.

With an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language film, Cold War is nostalgically shot in sterling black and white. Still, with such an unsparing, unsentimental approach, this romance manages to feel lush, passionate, and stark all at once.

Cold War stars the striking Tomasz Kot and the immensely talented actor/singer Joanna Kulig; an instant, Marilyn-Monroe-meets-Liv Ullmann-esque vision.

The tragic yearning in this impossibly sexy film is so palpable that it makes you feel thankful to be alive with human feelings, heartbreaks of the past be damned.

Cold War plays Thursday, February 14 at 7 p.m. at The Chaba Theatre, 604 Connaught Drive.
