Jasper could soon have a new 88-bedroom hotel built on Connaught Drive, at the old Esso gas station site.
The parcel of land, between Marmot Lodge and the Sawridge Inn, has been conditionally rezoned by Parks Canada from Automobile Service Station District (C4) to Tourist Commercial District (C2).
The proposed new hotel will have 88 bedrooms, with 54 staff accommodation beds provided off-site at the Marmot Lodge property next door.
Twenty-six hotel rooms at Marmot Lodge, owned by Pursuit, will be converted into staff quarters - 25 one-bedroom units and one two-bedroom unit.
And Marmot Lodges lease will be amended to say it will maintain its current staff accommodation units, as well as adding the new staff units for the new hotel.
Parks said in its acceptance of the rezoning that the 54 staff beds are far more staff accommodation than is required, and key to the proposals conditional approval.
Pursuit must now obtain a Development Permit for the project before December 31, 2020, and the off-site staff accommodation units must be completed before Parks Canada will issue an Occupancy Permit for the new hotel.
Pursuit has been contacted for more information about the project.
Edited: A previous version of this article stated this site was a former Shell gas station.
