A winter storm warning is in effect for Jasper National Park.

Environment Canada released the warning at 3:23 p.m. today (Friday, January 31) for Highway 93 North from Jasper to the Saskatchewan River Crossing.

According to the release, Jasper will see a "long duration heavy snowfall event" that will intensify this evening and end on Saturday evening.

Snowfall amounts will be between 30 and 50 centimetres, with upwards of 70 centimetres possible in some areas.

Strong winds will accompany the snow, which will cause reduced visibility in blowing snow.

Environment Canada urged drivers to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.

The Icefield Parkway is closed for avalanche control until Sunday evening and further road closures are possible.

Check Alberta 511 before travelling.
