Billy Crystal's latest movie surprised me by having Billy Crystal in it. I was shocked that he is still acting and the lead of the film. With 73 acting credits, 31 writing credits and 24 producer credits, Billy certainly has contributed. The entertainment industry would have been dull if it was not for Billy Crystals influence. Without Billy, we would not have When Harry Met Sally, Forget Paris and City Slickers. Even his small part in The Princess Bride raised the bar for everyone involved. Billy can take the most mundane gesture and turn into something that will steal the entire scene. His facial expressions are what makes him a star due to their simplicity. Those micro expressions built an entire career and no one does it better than Crystal.
Tiffany Haddish is probably one of the few comedians that can hold her ground scene after scene with Billy Crystal. I enjoy Haddishs raunchy style of comedy and it certainly works for this film. My first introduction to Tiffany Haddish was in the movie Girls Trip, and I thought the lady knows comedy and how to push it right to the edge. What I did not expect was Tiffany singing and being serious when the role required it.
The film is billed as a comedy, but it really is a serious drama. There is comedy at the beginning of the film and things take a turn when we realize the main character has dementia. Here Today is a film that will make you laugh and cry all in a few minutes. If you are willing to take a chance, you might be pleasantly surprised by Billys newest project.
