Jasper businesses, organizations and community members were recognized last week at the Chamber of Commerce’s Business and Ambassador Awards gala.

The annual awards ceremony celebrates excellence in our town from local ambassadors and businesses - this year handing out 11 awards.

The Jasper branch of the Royal Canadian Legion and Source For Sports were the big winners of the night, each receiving two awards.

Source for Sports won awards for Business of the Year and Disability Confident Employer, a new award for this event that received the highest number of nominations.
Owner Doug Albert said: “I really am quite honoured.

“We have an employee who has been around us for probably four to five years. He started having to have person with him all the time and now he comes on his scheduled day and is just part of the team.

“He is a great young man.”

The Legion won the Communities in Bloom and the People’s Choice awards.

Greg Van Tighem, vice-president of the branch, said: “My family is a family of veterans - my children grew up in the Legion. It is an amazing community.

“We are dedicated to contributing to the community and veterans and we appreciate your support.”

And Sue Henderson, Legion manager, said as she accepted the People’s Choice award: “Thank you everyone. Thank you to my team and every one of you who comes to our Legion who makes us a team and a community.”

Two members of Jasper Legion won individual awards, too.

DJ Klymchuk took Community Ambassador of the Year for his championing of events and activities in Jasper.

And Kevin Henderson won the Individual Award of Distinction, presented by Justin Melnyk, vice-president of Jasper Chamber of Commerce.

Melnyk said of Henderson, who is “known for his outside voice” and speaking to issues, concerns and situations: “When it comes down to it, he has a heart of gold and a warm disposition and a brain that thinks through difficult situations.”

The Awards Gala was hosted by the Sawridge Inn and Conference Centre on November 7 and MC’d by deputy mayor Paul Butler.
