Tourism Jasper has decided to reduce its Jasper in January program due to the rapid transmission of the Omicron variant in recent weeks.
While the overarching festival will continue, many events have been postponed or cancelled altogether.
鈥淎s always, we're encouraging residents and visitors to be respectful and adhere to public health restrictions at all times,鈥� said James Jackson, president and CEO of Tourism Jasper, in a Jan. 7 update.
鈥淟ike many of you, I am discouraged from cancelling another highly anticipated event. But I am inspired by everyone鈥檚 flexibility, understanding, and above all, respect for one another鈥檚 health and safety.鈥�
The Street Party & Fireworks has been cancelled, as has the After Dark Concert Series.
Both Wine in Winter and Whiskey Wine & Hops are postponed until April, while the Jasper Cup Pond Hockey Tournament is tentatively proceeding.
鈥淎lthough we won鈥檛 be celebrating together as planned, I encourage everyone to take some time and celebrate the lighter side of winter鈥攕afely,鈥� Jackson said.
鈥淕et outside and enjoy the many light installations, fantastic skiing, and world-class outdoor recreational activities still available as part of Jasper in January.鈥�
As of the end of Jan. 5, Alberta reported 39,897 active cases of COVID-19.
The province currently doesn鈥檛 have capacity restrictions for outdoor events, but they must maintain at least two metres between households or two close contacts for those living alone.
Unless a restriction exemption program is implemented, indoor events are required to limit capacity to 1/3 fire code occupancy and require attendees to be with household members only, or two close contacts if they live alone.
