Jasper recorded 38 new cases of COVID-19 since Dec. 28, bringing the total number of confirmed active cases to 57 as of the end of Jan. 3.
Overall, there were 34,276 active cases in Alberta, but Premier Jason Kenney said this number is based on PCR tests and the real number is much higher.
The surge in cases is largely due to the Omicron variant.
Twelve deaths related to COVID-19 have also been reported in Alberta since Dec. 28.
One of these deaths was confirmed to be a child who had a complex medical condition and was between the ages of five and nine.
Kenney encouraged Albertans to get vaccinated or get their booster if they have already received two doses.
He also asked people to limit their interpersonal contacts.
