This year has been pretty decent for films compared to last year. The Hollywood machine is fired up and turning out movies that are engaging their target audiences. It is nice however, when a movie comes out and it is not intended for the masses. Best Sellers is designed for a smaller audience. It is not an indie flick, but it comes close because it has elements that are not mainstream. It is well written and it kept me entertained, but it dragged in sections. This film is not for everyone due to it being a true drama.
The main reason I spent the time watching Best Sellers is for the two incredibly gifted actors that were the stars. Michael Caine and Aubrey Plaza are what makes this film worth watching. I have never been disappointed in anything that Michael Caine has done. He still has acting chops even at the young age of 88. He could recite the abcs and make it worthy of an Oscar nomination. Aubrey Plaza is the wildcard that I knew would bring her role to a level that would equally match Caine. Plaza is probably one of the most underrated actresses in tinseltown. Her deadpan style and awkwardness is why she is so great. Aubrey is different from everyone else and that is why I seek out movies that she is in.
This is the kind of movie to watch when you have watched everything else. It is a drama so prepare yourself for a slowburn that takes a while for the fuse to be lit.
