Kevin Lazzari | Special to the 51
Have you ever watched a movie that you thought would be terrible? “Cruella” is one of those films that I would have never considered viewing, but I took a chance. For me, Disney movies have been hit and miss the last few years. When I heard Disney was going to reinvent the “101 Dalmatians” concept, I was curious. What could be possible by focusing on Cruella, and why pick her as a central character? Occasionally, I am surprised by what screenwriters come up with, and in the case of “Cruella,” they shocked me.
Emma Stone is Cruella, and she went beyond what the role required. She was magnificent and proved that she is a force to be reckoned with. Every scene with Emma Stone is a delight, and I could not get enough of her brilliant performance. Emma Thompson was equally matched to Stone, and the two provided entertainment that is not typical of a Disney flick. Scene for scene, they played off each other, and the results were impressive.
“Cruella” exceeded what I thought was possible for a Disney movie, and I hope there is a sequel. This is not a kids movie and falls more into the young adult realm. Thank you, Disney, for providing some of the greatest entertainment ever produced by your company.
